The Anti-Resolution Revolution

The New Year is just hours away, which has everyone talking about that time-honored tradition—making resolutions. Keeping them, however, is another matter. 

At Yes Health, we’re not exactly anti-resolution. It’s just that we recognize how easy it is to set a HUGE goal for ourselves starting January 1 (i.e. loose 50 pounds, give up alcohol, quit smoking, stop eating sugar, start running 5 miles every day, etc.) and then immediately feel overwhelmed when we don’t nail it in the first few days or weeks of the New Year.

We love the idea of goal-setting—and of setting ourselves, and our members, up for success. So we practice and encourage baby steps, because making small, healthy changes every day can add up to some pretty big shifts over time. And since they’re gradual, these new healthy habits are more apt to stick

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Make water your favorite beverage. Drinking more water improves digestion, helps flush toxins out of your system and keeps you feeling full longer so you consume fewer calories. It also gives your skin a healthy glow.

Eat more fruits and veggies. Fruits and vegetables are low in calories AND pack a serious punch in the nutrition department. Try incorporating more of them—raw and cooked— into every meal and snack.

Choose whole, organic foods. If you can’t pronounce the ingredients list, take a pass. It’s best to consume foods as close to their natural state as possible. Frequent farmers markets, get reacquainted with your local grocery store’s produce section and, come spring, try growing a few plants of your own, like herbs, tomatoes and lettuce. You’ll be amazed at how satisfying it feels (and tastes) to harvest some of your very own food!

Make more home-cooked meals. Try prepping for the week on the weekend and cook in larger batches so you have leftovers. Look for inspiration on the web (we like sites like food52.com, greatest.com and epicurious.com) and Yes Health’s Wednesday recipe of the week!

Get to sleep earlier so you can wake up earlier. Use the extra 30 minutes or so of daylight you’ve carved out for yourself to stretch, meditate or exercise. Do something just for you that helps you feel calm and centered so you’re ready to take on the day.

Address stress. A lot affects our health. You may already have impeccable eating and exercise habits, but if your finances are stressing you out so you can’t sleep at night, it’s time to get them in order! Enlist the help you need to lift that extra weight off your shoulders.

Recognize maintenance as a goal. We spend so much time focused on what comes next that we sometimes forget to appreciate how far we’ve come to get exactly where we are right now. Stop to give yourself a pat on the back for all you’ve accomplished. You’re doing great!
