How to Survive Sugar Season

by Yes Health

Boo!

It’s Halloween, and so it begins… the Season of Sugar. From October through January 1, it’s pretty much all sugar all the time–at home, in the office, and everywhere else we turn. So, the question is, how do we survive without losing all the healthy momentum we’ve gained?

Yes Health is here to help.

But first, for a bit of context, here are 5 frightening facts about our collective sweet tooth:

Five Scary Sweet Tooth Facts:

  1. The average American consumes 3.4 pounds of candy over Halloween and a whopping 130 pounds every year.
  2.  A 12-ounce soda contains 10 teaspoons of sugar.
  3. 15 pounds is the amount of weight you could gain in a year if you had just one soda a day without cutting calories elsewhere.
  4. The recommended daily sugar limit is 6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men.
  5. Our actual daily intake is closer to 22 teaspoons—that’s 355 extra calories with ZERO nutritional value.

Making healthier choices for ourselves and our families can sometimes be as simple as planning ahead. Try these tips to help you avoid the barrage of sugary temptations through the holidays and beyond, and Coach Anne's healthy dessert recipe, banana bonbons:

Five Ways to Survive Sugar Season:

  • Keep snacks on hand that pack a protein punch, including apples with nut butter or cheese, bean dips with veggies or edamame.
  • Eat something healthy before you get super hungry. Waiting too long between meals means you’re more likely to overeat—and order dessert.
  • Stay well-hydrated. Thirst is often mistaken for hunger, so keep your water bottle filled and close by.
  • Enjoy nature’s autumnal sweets—oranges, apples, pears, and pumpkin. Pair them with protein for better blood sugar control.
  • If you have kids, you might not want them to eat all that candy (and you probably don’t want to eat it yourself either) so consider sharing your bounty. Operation Gratitude, Operation Shoebox, Kool Smiles, and Halloween Candy Buyback all send donated sweets to our troops who are deployed overseas or just returning home.
